02 FAQ

Common questions.

Not seeing your question? Call Captain Richard at (816) 686-1747.

When is the best time to go fishing in Crystal River?
Fishing is excellent year-round. Spring and fall are popular for Redfish and Spotted Seatrout, summer mornings are great for family outings, and winter brings steady Sheepshead and Black Drum action. Captain Richard times trips with tides and seasons for the best chance at fish.
Do I need a fishing license to fish with Tops Charters?
No. Your fishing license is included in the trip — Tops Charters operates under a state-issued license that covers every guest on board.
What's the deposit and cancellation policy?
A deposit is required for all bookings and is applied at checkout. The remaining balance is due on the trip date as credit or cash. Guest cancellations 3 or more days prior to the trip date receive a refund on the deposit. Rescheduling is encouraged and depends on guide availability. If Captain Richard must cancel due to inclement weather, health, or equipment, you can reschedule for a later date or receive a full deposit refund.
What kinds of fish can we expect to catch?
Depending on the season, expect Redfish, Spotted Seatrout, Sheepshead, Mangrove Snapper, Black Drum, and occasional Snook or Tarpon. Captain Richard tailors each trip to current conditions to maximize your chances.
How many people can join a trip?
Trips include up to 2 guests in the base rate, with $50 per additional angler up to a total of 6 people. Scallop trips are quoted for 4 people with the same $50/additional structure up to 6 total.
Are Tops Charters trips family-friendly?
Yes — Captain Richard specializes in family-friendly trips and welcomes kids of all ages. The calm inshore and nearshore waters and relaxed pace make Tops Charters a great choice for first-timers and young anglers. Check ahead for child life jacket sizes.
Can I keep the fish I catch?
Yes, within Florida's legal size and bag limits. Captain Richard cleans and prepares fish at the dock so you can take home your fresh catch.
Do you offer a military or first responder discount?
Yes — active military, veterans, and first responders save 10% on every Tops Charters trip. Mention it when you book, and please bring proof of service (military ID, VA card, or first responder credentials) the day of your trip.
Are gratuities expected?
Tips to your captain are greatly appreciated for a quality trip but never required.
Do I need to bring my own gear?
No — we provide all standard gear so you don't need to worry. You're welcome to bring your own if you prefer; please let Captain Richard know prior to your trip so he can plan accordingly.
