Captain Richard R. Delgado Jr.

From rod to rifle and back.

20 years in the U.S. Army, four years guiding the Nature Coast, and a lifetime of fishing.

01 The Story

Meet Captain Richard Delgado

A Passionate Crystal River Fishing Guide with Local Knowledge and a Lifetime on the Water.

Fishing has been part of Captain Richard Delgado’s life since he was just five years old. What began as simple family trips with a rod in hand quickly grew into a lifelong passion. During his 20 years of service in the U.S. Army, Richard had the opportunity to fish waters across the globe, gaining experience in a wide variety of techniques and environments. When he retired in 2022, he returned to his roots on Florida’s Gulf Coast and founded Tops Charters, fulfilling his dream of sharing the waters of Crystal River with others.

Over the years, Captain Richard has developed a reputation as a knowledgeable and approachable guide. His easygoing nature makes him especially popular with families, first-time anglers, and kids eager to catch their first fish. Whether targeting Redfish on the grass flats, drifting for Seatrout, or spotting dolphins along the way, Richard creates an atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable and involved. His goal isn’t just about catching fish—it’s about creating lasting memories and helping every guest gain confidence on the water.

Safety and professionalism are cornerstones of Richard’s approach. He is a fully licensed and insured captain with CPR and First Aid certification, and he takes pride in making each trip both enjoyable and secure. Guests often mention how patient and encouraging he is, whether teaching light tackle techniques, explaining tide patterns, or sharing stories about Crystal River’s natural beauty. With years of experience fishing the Nature Coast, he knows how to adapt to the seasons so that anglers always have the best chance at success, no matter the time of year.

02 The Captain

Patient, professional, prepared.

Captain Richard's reputation is built on three things: he knows the water, he knows how to teach, and he runs a clean operation. CPR and First Aid certified, fully licensed and insured — and every piece of gear on the boat is maintained the way only a 20-year Army veteran would maintain it.

Reviews mention his patience with kids, his easy conversation, and his ability to put guests on fish whether it's their first cast or their thousandth. Tournament-level local knowledge of every backwater hole in Crystal River, paired with the kind of welcoming personality that makes families come back year after year.

03 The Boat

24′ Triton, 2004. Built for these waters.

Our 24′ 2004 Triton is built for Crystal River — single 225HP engine, 40 mph cruising, six-guest capacity, and a shallow draft for skinny water work. Outfitted with GPS, fish finder, wireless trolling motor, livewell, ice-box, on-board head, and full snorkeling equipment for scallop trips.

Whether you're sight-casting to tailing reds on the flats or anchoring up on an oyster bar for trout, the Triton handles it all. Clean, fast, well-maintained — and stable enough that kids and first-timers feel right at home.

04 Philosophy

Built for memories, not just photos.

What it actually feels like to be on the boat with Captain Richard.

01

Tides & weather first

Start times shift to match the bite. Captain Richard reads the tide every morning and adjusts the day to put you on fish.

02

Hands-on teaching

Light tackle, live bait under a cork, sight-casting — Captain Richard walks you through it. Beginners leave more confident; veterans pick up new tricks.

03

Safe and welcoming

Veterans, families, kids — everyone gets the same patient, professional treatment. Dolphins, manatees, alligators? Bonus sightings on most trips.
